2023 INJURY INSIGHT Series

An employee-centric understanding of an individual’s injury or illness and factors that impact rehabilitation improves communications and outcomes for all stakeholders and most importantly the injured worker.  Research has shown that organizations adopting an advocacy-based claims model are experiencing lower litigation rates, expedited return to work outcomes, and happier and more productive employees.

Work Conditioning vs Work Hardening

Join Dr. Colleen Medlin as she presents “Work conditioning versus work hardening: Understand the differences, similarities, and where they fit within the claimant’s rehabilitation and recovery” in Medical and Life Care Consulting’s 2023 Injury Insight Series.

Colleen Medlin, PT, DPT, CEAS received her Bachelor of Health Science, Master’s in Physical Therapy, and Doctorate in Physical Therapy degrees from Misericordia University. She had multiple experiences as a successful Facility Director prior to assuming a Multi-Site Director role in Maryland while with Physiotherapy Associates.

 

During Colleen’s clinical and operations career trajectory, she became certified to perform Functional Capacity Evaluations, a Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist, a Certified Injury Prevention Specialist, and honed her academic focus on workers’ compensation and work rehabilitation. As Colleen performed these services and built relationships with referrals sources and payors, she became recognized as a leader in this field and transitioned to a role of Regional Workers’ Compensation Clinical Specialist with Physiotherapy Associates. Based on multiple requests for her expertise, Colleen also founded CAM Peer Review, LLC to perform utilization review of Physical Therapy treatment, medical necessity, and billing.

 

Colleen assumed the role of Regional Director of Work Strategies after Physiotherapy Associates was acquired by Select Medical and increased her focus on payor relations, including managing the relationships with the various networks in the industry. She was then hired by Phoenix Rehabilitation as Director of Clinical Operations for Workplace Health and Workers’ Compensation. This expanded her knowledge into occupational medicine and expanding her focus on working with employers and reducing OSHA recordables.

 

Colleen now works as the Director of Workers’ Compensation Clinical Services for Professional PT. Her focus is on providing a comprehensive workers’ compensation program clinically, to meet the needs of the employer, physician, case manager, and insurance company. She also works with employers to help evaluate and manage their injuries and safety in the work place.

Dr. Yong is Chief of Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Pain Management Center.

Dr. Robert J. Yong, MD, MBA

Invasive Pain Management Techniques

Join Dr. Robert Yong as he presents on invasive pain management techniques.  In this session, Dr. Robert Yong discusses pain medicine, as a specialty, and what modalities we utilize to manage patients suffering with acute and chronic pain. 

 

The mantra of pain medicine is multi-modal and multi-disciplinary and within the specialty of pain medicine, there are many interventional options to reduce and manage pain from injections to surgeries.

 

 

During this session, Dr. Yong will cover the gamut of interventions and future directions pain medicine is headed.

 

 

Participants will complete the session with a better understanding of:

1. What is included in the multi-disciplinary approach to pain medicine

2. Basics of the interventions we have to offer patients suffering with acute and chronic pain

3. What surgical options patients have suffering with chronic pain

Dr. Yong serves as the Chief of Pain Medicine and the Medical Director of the Pain Management Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Yong attended college at the University of Texas in Austin and completed the joint MD/MBA program from Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Management. Dr. Yong then moved to Boston where he graduated from Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s anesthesiology residency program and served as a Chief Resident. He then completed the Pain Medicine fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital with additional rotations at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the VA hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.

 

As a resident at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he received recognition as the Distinguished Resident of the Year and was selected as a Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Practice Management Scholar. Dr. Yong then joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine as an Assistant Professor. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Yong was awarded Anesthesiology’s 2013 Outstanding Teacher of the Year and 2013 Intraoperative Teaching and Clinical Mentorship awards. Since joining the faculty in 2013, Dr. Yong was selected as Associate Program Director for the Pain Management Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was recognized with the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2021 Pain Attending of the Year awards. Additionally, he was awarded the 2018 Outstanding Mentoring Award by the Department of Anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

 

While at Harvard and Johns Hopkins, Dr. Yong has published on opioid management, regenerative medicine, cancer pain, neuromodulation, and practice efficiency. His clinical interests include cancer pain, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and neuromodulation therapy. Dr. Yong also has interest in product development and has done collaborative work with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard Business School, and Harvard’s Graduate School of Engineering.

 

Dr. Yong is fluent in Spanish and also has a passion for international health. He has spent time on medical mission trips to the Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Ecuador, Brazil, and Guatemala.

Dr. Jessica Aidlen is a board-certified orthopaedic spine surgeon. She earned her medical degree from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine. She completed her residency in orthopaedic surgery at UMass Medical Center and her fellowship in spine surgery at Brown/Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Aidlen is currently the Chief of Spine Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Associate Chair of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at NWH, and Spine Consultant for Boston College Athletics. She is the Medical Director for the Spine Center at NWH. Dr. Aidlen is an Assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Tufts School of Medicine and is active with clinical research and teaching. She is the founder of Reactivate Your Spine, a holistic spine care initiative. Her clinical interests include minimally invasive spine surgery, cervical disc arthroplasty, and motion preservation, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, cervical myelopathy, and spine injuries in sports.

Practical Applications of Functional Neurology

Join returning speaker Dr. Joshua Helm DC, DACNB as he takes us through an experience at his clinic, highlighting diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, as well as treatment strategies for patients suffering with traumatic brain injuries.

 

This session is a follow-up to Dr. Helm’s 2022 session on concussions, and will help participants gain a deeper understanding of diagnostics and treatment methods of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and feature several real-life case studies.

 

Participants will complete this session with a better understanding of:

1. Some of the latest diagnostic and therapeutic equipment for traumatic brain injuries

2. The various effects of post-concussion symptomology, such as CRPS, Vertigo, Vascular Headaches,        Visual Vestibular mismatch, POTS, post-traumatic muscular guarding and more

Dr. Helm has served as Clinic Director of Greater Boston Performance Care for over 4 years, with a primary focus on sport’s injuries, concussion rehabilitation, functional neurology, and vestibular disorders. He completed his clinical education through the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs in Western NY where he was first exposed to brain-based treatment strategies and the exceptional nuance in patient outcomes. 

 

Dr. Helm acquired his Board Certification from the American Chiropractic Neurology Board in 2020. The neurological aspect of care and its effect on the recovering athlete has always been a crucial focus of Dr. Helm’s in creating lasting improvement in his patients. Growing up in Bethlehem, NY, he found his life-long passion for martial arts, Aikido, Judo and Brazilian Jujitsu. Dr. Helm has made it his mission to find the most effective treatment strategies to bring individuals out of pain and dysfunction, and back to doing what they love. In his free time, Dr. Helm enjoys spending time with his wife and puppy, Ori.
